Is it important to update windows (xp sp2) If you have the best anti-spy, Adware, virus, firewalls?

Updates like, windows critical & security updates. My friends hasn’t updated windows since past 6 months & but is frequently updating anti-virus, spy, adware etc. he says, he is visiting all the website & never had any security threats or problems. Whats your opinion about this ?

Windows updates are aimed at specific vulnerabilities in Windows software that worms, viruses, and Trojans target. It is possible to exploit some of those vulnerabilities even if you religiously update your anti virus software. They release the updates for a reason, you should run them.
