Adware sent everyone in my mailing list an announcement Lining on hull. Do I need a better antivirus program?

First I'm embarrassed because it was posted in-laws and family members and co-workers who are like "Why did you send me an ad for Viagra? So I ran my spyware detector program. But how did it get past my anti-virus first? I use Avast. I need a better anti-virus? Can you recommend one (thats not too expensive)? And if they saw my mailing list they have my bank info too? I pay all my bills line. Thats scary.

Ok but you have Avast antispyware and antimalware you? Make a boot scan with Avast (which should remove the worm), then run SUPERAntiSpyware Free Malwarebytes & free. If you still have problems after the analysis of rootkits.

Excerpt: Direct connect is a peer-to-peer file-sharing protocol. Direct connect clients connect to a central hub and can download files directly from one another. Hubs feature a list of clients or users connected to them. Users can search for files and download them from other clients, as well as chat with other users. NeoModus was started as a company funded by the adware “Direct Connect” by Jonathan Hess in November, 1999 while he was in high school . The first third-party client was called “DClite”, which never fully supported the file sharing aspects of the protocol. Hess released a new version of Direct Connect, requiring a simple encryption key to initiate a connection, locking out third-party clients. The key was cracked, and the author of DClite released a new version of DClite compatible with the new software from NeoModus. Some time after, DClite was rewritten as Open Direct Connect with goals of having an MDI user interface and using plug-ins for file sharing protocols (similar to MLDonkey). Open Direct Connect also did not have complete support for the full file sharing aspects of the protocol, but a port to Java did. Some time later, other clients such as DCTC (Direct Connect Text Client) and DC++ started popping up. The Direct connect protocol is a text-based computer protocol, in which commands and their information are sent in clear text, without encryption. As clients connect to a central source of distribution (the hub) of information, the hub is required to have a substantial amount of upload bandwidth available. There is no official specification of the protocol. This means that every client and hub besides the original Neo-modus client and hub has been forced to reverse engineer the information. As such, any protocol specification … More:

 Spyware

Spyware

The term “spyware” is not well defined. Generally it is used to refer to any software that is downloaded onto a person’s computer without their knowledge. Spyware may collect information about a computer user’s activities and transmit that information to someone else. It may change computer settings, or cause “pop-up” advertisements to appear (in that context, it is called “adware”). Spyware may redirect a Web browser to a site different from what the user intended to visit, or change the user’s home page. A type of spyware called “keylogging” software records individual keystrokes, even if the author modifies or deletes what was written, or if the characters do not appear on the monitor. Thus, passwords, credit card numbers, and other personally identifiable information may be captured and relayed to unauthorized recipients. Some of these software programs have legitimate applications the computer user wants. They obtain the moniker “spyware” when they are installed surreptitiously, or perform additional functions of which the user is unaware. Users typically do not realize that spyware is on their computer. They may have unknowingly downloaded it from the Internet by clicking within a website, or it might have been included in an attachment to an electronic mail message (e-mail) or embedded in other software. According to a survey and tests conducted by America Online and the National Cyber Security Alliance, 80% of computers in the test group were infected by spyware or adware, and 89% of the users of those computers were unaware of it. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a consumer alert on spyware in October 2004. It provided a list of warning signs that might indicatethat a computer is infected with spyware, and advice on what to do if it is. This new book helps shed light on this insidious nightmare created by members of the human race to wreck havoc on the remainder.
