How do I go about routinely cleaning my computer of viruses and spyware?
My father has entrusted his Windows computer to me and now I can see that it is overflowing with all types of bugs, viruses, spam, etc. I want to clean out my computer with my avast! antivirus, and I used to see my dad maybe putting the computer in safe mode before starting avast? Any guidence on this, or suggestions?

Special note:
Efforts to ‘clean’ a system will prove to be a hugely time consuming task, and maybe even impossible, if the system is left in it’s current configurations.
In it’s ‘out-of-the-box’ condition, MS Windows is awash with security problems and conditions that most users are unaware of, and securing that system from Internet assault & increasing predation, is not a single application, or a suite: and it’s not a “one step- 10 second fix” that so many want.
It’s layers of protection, user habits, system configuration, real time protection; and most important, threat landscape awareness (because the internet is so fluid and dynamic, it changes almost hourly).
Do-it-all suites (CareOne, McAfee, or Norton) give users ‘feel good’ security, and lull them into complacency, which often has very bad results.

study up, and pick some of the frontline, real-time defenses. Create a restore point after each install, then run the system to verify that application’s ‘friendliness’ with your system before adding other applications.
Generally speaking: as a system’s convenience, interactiveness, flexibility & complexity increase: security decreases.

Avast! (anti-virus);
Zone Alarm (firewall);
SpywareBlaster (snoopware prevention)

here check ‘Override automatic….’; ‘Allow session cookies’; ‘Allow 1st party cookies’ & ‘Block 3rd Party Cookies’.
