Doc file icon Word does not display ??!!?

You can try to enter the Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs, and clicking on your installation Microsoft Office. Select Edit and instead of delete / uninstall the program, perform a repair on it. This should take a minute or two and Office inspects your installation and repair things that are wrong with that, hopefully, including the file association / icon problem you see.
