I once would have recommended AVG, but not anymore. I had to sort out my friend’s daughter’s PC and she had AVG installed. It was freezing up and displaying all symptoms of a virus, but AVG found nothing. I downloaded Avira and it found 7 Trojan Horses! Never would I use AVG again. It also scores lowest in detection rates – 82%, compared to 94% for Avira.
As far as spyware goes, the free version of Spyware Doctor is about as good as you’ll get. It features limited real-time protection (unlike Lavasoft AdAware 2007, which requires you to upgrade to enable any kind of real-time protection), and has found the most spyware:

You have to download it as part of a Google pack to get the free version, but don’t worry – you can untick as many programs as you want so you can just choose to download Spyware Doctor.
AdAware 2007 is very good – but you need to remember to perform the updates and scans manually, whereas the free version of Spyware Doctor features automatic scanning and updates.
