Replacing internet connection wires?
Would it cost money to have your internet and phone wires replaced/fixed? I’ve determined that the reason why my internet connection is so spiky and slow at times is because of my internet wires (which are the phone lines). It’s not spyware or whatever downloaded malicious software because the internet speed would be constantly slow then (the internet continuously spikes up and down many times a minute). Plus my dad told me that our phone lines are old and somewhat deteriorating. I was hoping that we would upgrade to Verizon FiOS (they offer free installation of the new fiber cables with a 2 year plan), but it’s pretty expensive. So does it cost money to have your wires replaced? I’m not talking about the wiring inside the house because I’m not sure which set of wires it is (house or street), but I do know that if it’s inside your house, you have to pay for it.
There are several options available to the consumer. In your case, you can sign up for FIOS and receive fast fiber to the home for your internet, television and phone service all in one low monthly bill. The greatest advantage to FIOS is that phone service is one flat rate anywhere in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are no lower usage rates for non-peak hours or weekend times (the “dual tier” billing rates). Another option is to use cable television service. Brighthouse Networks (Time Warner) and Comcast have similar programs to Verizon FIOS with highly competitive billing charges.
You can request using high speed internet service from your local telephone company over copper wires, called Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service. The speed offered is in the range of 750Kb to T-1 (1.544Mb) service. T-1 is the fastest speed that ordinary copper wiring can handle. Naturally, the faster the speed, the more expensive.
If these options are not feasible, then you can ask to have your lines checked for a fee. You will probably learn that although the cables are old they are usable for Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS lines). The cables to your house will not be scheduled for replacement in the immediate future. In other words you will have to remain on copper cable and enter the internet at the standard 56Kb speed. I have to tell you that this speed is never reached because of the characteristics of copper wiring and the distance to the central office. Losses caused by age, distance from the office, your modem components and other factors will decrease this speed to somewhere between 33Kb and 56Kb, probably around 40Kb.
Nobody is willing to replace the cables because of the exorbitant expense (in the 100′s of thousands of dollars) to replace a copper cable. You are correct in assuming that the house wires are not the problem because you are receiving dial tone inside the house. I hope this answers your questions and concerns.
