spyware internet

Spyware is one of the most rampant malware problems there is on the internet. It’s also known as privacy invasive software, and should always be removed from your computer when you get it. It often comes as part of a package with other computer parasites, which altogether may be part of a software download that may or may not be otherwise useful.

This software is often thought of as the same thing as Adware. It’s actually a variation of different types of adware infections that specifically will try to get information from your computer. While not all adware will scan your computer for potentially sensitive information, these programs will.

These bugs will rummage through your temporary folders, looking for your browsing history and tracking cookies. They then upload these files, along with your computer’s information to a remote server. This remote server then makes a profile of your computer on its database and sends advertisements to you geared to be more user-specific. Your information is then potentially exploitable, especially if you have login information to your bank or credit card accounts.

The first type is the standard pop-up generator. Often, this will also be a Trojan Downloader type. This is the type that most people are familiar with, at least visually. In the case of spyware, the pop-up ads are eerily similar to subjects that you may normally be interested in. As said before, they know your browsing habits.

Another type of program that can go either way is the Browser Hijacker. These programs pretend to be a Browser Helper Object, or BHO. They often take the guise of a toolbar or other sort of object designed to enhance your internet experience. What they actually do, though, is change your internet browser’s home page and redirect your browsing to its own websites.

Yet another type is the Trojan Backdoor. These are possibly the most damaging forms of this software out there. Basically, what it does is it bypasses your security tools, essentially leaving you a sitting duck for a hacker. They can directly send you more adware, viruses, worms, and they can even hijack your computer in some cases. In cases like this, they will often use your computer to illegally click repeatedly on an adword accounts. This can leave you with a question mark over your head when the police arrive.

Rogue security tools are almost their own category of malware, but they still use spyware software. These programs are more clearly criminal in intent than most others in this category. These programs will convince you that you have infected files on your computer, and then will try to convince you to download their software. During this process, you will be asked to give up your credit card information. Not only is this a scam, but you may also be a victim of identity theft if you get infected.

In short, spyware is an epidemic across the internet. However, if you have a good antispyware program, it’s nothing to worry about.
