Will Norton antivirus get rid of spyware protect 2009?

I just insulted Norton antivirus,i had another virus protector that some dumb friend put on my laptop. he said it was just as good and it’s free but he was very wrong! so now Norton is running a scan this very moment, but i just found out that my laptop has that stupid spyware protect 2009 program and i also just learned that it is not a good thing. So i was wondering if any one knew if the Norton scan will detect it and take care of it? any advise is appreciated please i need help the pop ups are driving me crazy, thank you very much.
