My internet browser doesn’t work even though the internet connection is fine.?

IE 7 doesn’t work in my vista labtop even though the internet
connection is fine – putty and skype works fine.
Here are what I’ve tried.
1. Install Mozilla firefox -> Mozilla also gives an error message.
2. Installed spyware doctor, this detected some spyware but requires
registration to fix the problem.
3. Installed Ad-Aware 2007, but this didn’t detect any spyware.
4. Installed “Broswer Hijack Recover”. This says the problem is fixed
but I may need a IE CD then says the installation failed.
5. I downloaded IE7 and installed it. The installation seemed
successful but it still doesn’t work. When I tried to remove program
in “Control Panel”, IE 7 doesn’t show up even after new IE7
installation.
6. Tried removing Mozilla and re-installing it but Mozilla still does’t work
7. I do a full virus-scan every day so I don’t think it’s a virus problem but I’m running it again right now.

I faced the same issue yesterday. It appears to be some Microsoft auto updates issue. I used system restore to revert the updates from last 3 days, and then I got it working again. For now I’ve turned off auto updates. I’ll try turning it on after a week to see if MS has fixed the issue.
