I know the feeling. You are going about your business on the internet just like any other day. Suddenly a pop up advertisements flashes in front of your screen. Warning spyware detected on your computer! You may have panicked. What does this mean? How did it get here. Well the answer may surprise you.

Separating the real from the fake

First off it is an extremely rare occurrence that Windows would actually alert you that your computer is infected with spyware. About 98% of the time these are false errors! A real warning message would probably come in the form of a fatal eror or blue screen of death when registry files are messed with.

So is my computer infected with spyware?

Well yes, but not to the extent that the fake message warns. If you are getting that pop up then your computer has been infected with either spyware or viruses. But the fake message is the application that infected you! Typically these messages can get there from a combination of factors

• Visiting dangerous and malicious websites. These can include adult, free download, and song lyric listing sites amongst others

• Being the victim of social networking spam from Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, ect.

• Downloading dangerous files from P2P file sharing programs like Kazaa, Bearshare, and Limewire

• Clicking on a link from an email spam message.

These are many other methods of becoming infected with spyware but these are some of the most popular.

So what should I do

The most important thing is NOT to panic. The biggest mistake people make is click on the warning spyware detected advertisement and download the software. This will simply infect your computer worse while putting all your sensitive information (passwords, credit card numbers, bank account numbers) at risk. These are rogue spyware programs that promote “scareware” to get people to download the deadly software.
