Can my Macbook have a virus or spyware?

So I just got on my computer and it said that I had some infections and they needed to be taken care of, but i remember my old dell computer doing the same thing. So how do I run virus scans?

Macs are highly vulnerable to malware due to serious flaws in their design. The upside is that there is very little malware in the wild for OSX.
