Mac Virus Issues?!?

I recently bought a new Macbook Pro computer with an updated version of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Just a while ago I received a startling notification that I had some sort of Spyware on my computer. I decided to take action and downloaded a free virus scanning application called Avast! So far all it has found are 27, count um’ twenty seven, warnings. This makes me scared, and relieved in a sense. I know there are no viruses, but I also have to fear what is here, the warnings. I looked myself and some of the warnings include the user folder, a spotlight folder, and even the Avast! folder. I am deeply confused, and I seek the advice of someone with more Mac experience than I, for armed with only my mastery of Windows I am having a lot of trouble solving this problem. PLEASE RESPOND WITH AS MUCH INFORMATION AS YOU CAN PROVIDE.
NOTE: The number of warnings has increased since I began writing from 0 viruses, 29 warnings TO 0 viruses, 37 warnings.

Macs can get viruses, it’s just that unix (which os x is built on) is more resilient because you don’t always have root privileges. That being said, you probably don’t have a virus.

First of all, Avast is a program for sale. They are trying to scare you into buying it.

Second, it says warning and not virus. A warning could be anything. If you’re really concerned, take a look at the security settings under System Preferences and tweak them to suite your level or paranoia (I’m pretty satisfied with the out of the box settings myself, but I have changed a few things).

Pay attention to any weird behavior and watch what programs you download (speaking of which, never download a program from one of those ‘your computer may be infected’ ads…sorry to tell you too late) and use common sense.

I’m sure your computer is fine.
