Spyware and It’s Signs

Spyware scenario #1: You are peacefully, blissfully shopping for a wonderful limited-edition porcelain plate on eBay. You find it! It is the plate of your dreams. You place a bid and press the “My eBay” button to see how you’re doing with the process. Suddenly, a form appears before your eyes and it states, in a very officious manner, that this is a “new security form” checking your identity to make sure that your computer is secure for purchasing products on eBay. This form asks you for your name, address, credit card number with expiration date and id code on the back, you social security number, and birth date. Your brow wrinkles because you know that you have already established an account with eBay. You try to click the “X” at the upper right corner of the screen. It’s no use. The form has locked onto the screen and will not budge. You don’t know what to do.

Spyware scenario #2: You are trying to transfer funds from your PayPal account to your bank account to pay for your utility bills. Suddenly the same form appears, like a locust in the wind, to block your progress to your goal of moving your own hard-earned money from one place to another. The form asks the same questions as scenario #1 and it is not going anywhere. It freezes your computer when you want to make it go away by “Xing” it out. Once again, you don’t know what to do.

Stay calm and realize that as long as you don’t fill out that form you’re probably going to be okay. But you must do something and do it fast. First, I’ll tell you what NOT to do: Do not under any circumstances fill out that form, because someone or something is trying to steal your financial identity.

Yes, my friend, your computer has been contaminated by spyware. You are part of an alarming trend in cyber space. Preliminary results from Symantec, an internationally respected software security corporation which measures trends in spyware and security breaches for computers and cyber space, published 2008 findings that stated “the release rate of malicious code and other unwanted programs may be exceeding that of legitimate software applications.” Other findings show that malware, such as the spyware represented in scenarios #1 and #2, are the most common pathway from criminals to users, and that pathway is through the internet by email and on the World Wide Web.

Here’s what you SHOULD do if presented with one of those “New Security Forms.” First, get out of your current mode and restart you computer. Then, take your computer to a competent, paid, professional computer geek to have him install antispyware software to eliminate the spyware that has contaminated your computer or install such software yourself.

A good antispyware program is your only defense against malicious spyware. Regardless of who installs it, choose the best, most efficient antispyware so that your computer–and your peace of mind–will be restored in no time.
