Is it really necessary for those typical for a firewall?
I tried Zone Alarm … is shit and slow my CPU Dual Core with 2GB RAM, down. It is very annoying and slows the internet connection itself down, because it takes so long to check everything. I tried Comodo Firewall … it seems to do the same thing. It is very difficult to determine what "to keep up while the firewall learns on programs. The fact is, it never seems to "learn" all the uses of simple programs that I use (mostly messengers). Thus, the "training" bog permanently on my computer. Is there a "good" set to keep this on, without killing my computer? I'm under Vista Home Premium – if I use the "User Account Control" Warnings and firewall (with a virus scanner / spyware / adware scanner, of course) … Is it enough?
Part of the reason for a firewall is to prevent unwarranted intrusion by unwanted and undesirable things. If use antivirus software, antispyware and adware, and keep them all updated and current, and actually using them, your Vista firewall will be built sufficient. If you want to add a little more protection, then add a router. Everything must pass through the router, and is your first line of defense. I used XP firewall, router and the aforementioned anti-stuff for years and never had a virus in sniffing distance. I had so much trouble with Comodo I thought I was going to have to continue to get them to tell me how to get shit from my computer. They finally admitted "they had a problem with broadband wireless, but did not bother to tell me or anyone else about it. I just did not trust any of these programs, not more.
