I have a MacBook – Adware? Virus?
This has never really happened before. I’ve had my MacBook for about 6 months now and now and then I’ll get popups; who doesn’t? Today, though, an alert came up and without looking at it, I pressed OK and it brought me to one of those fake anti-virus sites that I know are really bad and can sometimes pop up randomly for no reason (I had them on my Dell, which ended up crashing).
Should I be worried? Does this mean I have a virus or adware on my computer? I have no antivirus because I was told it was unnecessary.
It wouldn’t allow me to navigate away from the site without another alert box coming up and having to press Cancel or OK.
There are no MacOS X viruses. You can’t have one. There are some Mac trojans, a new one showed up today (fake version of free copy of Snow Leopard), but you have to download and install the fake software with an admin password. My guess is that you have your popup ad blocker disabled in Safari and/or Firefox. Just turn it back on. Delete your cookies, cache, and history and you should be fine.
