adware hotbar virus
Vista Anti-virus 2008 removal problems?

I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program to try to rid my computer of Vista Anti-Virus 2008. It found no malware relating to this program (or so I think). This what was it founf and removed:

malware.trace
trojan.downloader
Adware.hotbar
adware.hotbar

Since I just got the pop-up, but didn’t download anything, did the virus not affect my computer and that’s why it’s not finding anything? If I am effected and this program didn’t find anything, does anyone know any other way to remove this?

Also, (sorry about all the questions), is it safe to do anything on my computer with this virus? What does the virus do?
PS- I have Windows XP and I’ve heard that there’s an XP Anti-Virus rogue, so am I affected since the pop-up I got was for Vista?
OK, so if I reinstall my OS, do I lose all my ddata and documents and installed programs on my hard drive?

I’ve read your previous questions and you’ve gotten good advice from Michael and JibbarJabbar.

Absolutely EVERY answer in this question is garbage; either bad advice (there’s no need to reformat) or bad programs (SpyNoMore, NoAdware) or useless to your situation (fileshredder).

In reference to your ‘additional detail’, Vista Antivirus *can* infect XP computers; and the various rogue XP Antivirus programs that are floating around (XP Antivirus, Antivirus XP) can infect Vista computers… they are all non-discriminatory and are able to infect all Windows systems.

… And don’t even think of reinstalling your OS. That was bad advice.
