Is the Windows activation key somehow tied to a particular CD?

I have a computer that’s rife with adware that 5 different antispyware programs haven’t eradicated. I want to format and reinstall XP home. I can’t find the original CD that came with the computer but it’s a Dell computer with the activation code on the side of it. Can I use another XP home CD from another Dell computer and enter the original code?

As long as the XP version is the same, go for it. Using a XP Pro key with XP Home would be a different matter.
