Uninstalled AVG but it’s still running. What to do?

I had a payment problem with AVG last year at renewal time and let it go; when it happened again this year, I went to Symantec. I uninstalled AVG using the change or delete programs option. My computer ran slower than usual. Today, my computer installed an security update, needed to reboot, and when it did, there was the AVG shield on the close screen, indicating the update was AVG. So I ran a search for Grisoft/AVG, found residual files, and deleted them. But when I go into the security options on the control panel, it indicates that I STILL have TWO anti-virus programs, one of which is up-to-date. Does anyone know what is going on here and how I can fix it? I am on my computer a lot these days, and I am scrupulous about virus/spyware scans, keeping it updated on all fronts, temp files, etc. deleted, and the registry well-oiled. I don’t need two conflicting anti-virus programs warring and slowing me down. Thanks in advance.

right click on task bar, open task manager and kill avg.exe or anything related to it ,then use the uninstall tool http://www.avg.com/download-tools .You need to kill the real time shield and exe running process in order to uninstall the avg.
